Jeanne--My heritage is French Canadian, so the Quebec thing is not so obscure for me. I even put my Quebec flag out yesterday. My source for some of the other weird holidays is my "Life in Hell" calendar. "Life in Hell" is my very best favorite comic strip and it is by Matt Groening. Everyday there is some little tid-bit of knowledge.
I did not know that, but somehow it seems fitting. I'll try to keep you in mind when I'm tempted to make a French Canadian joke, MaryRuth. Used to love "Life in Hell" too. Afterall, isn't that where it all started?
Jeanna--yeah...my ancestors were lumberjacks "up north". There are pretty many of them in Chippewa Falls I guess. One of my ancestors was a childhood friend of Solomon Juneau and they were voyageurs together and he helped Juneau in the infancy of Milwaukee. French Canadians are so super-awesome...how could there be any jokes relating to them?!?!? ;-) Life in Hell...what can I say...it's the best.

Let me explain. The term bubbler is a quintessential Milwaukee thing. A bubbler is what the rest of the world (except Rhode Island, parts of Connecticut and the Boston area) would call a drinking fountain. The Yoopers also use it, but we all know they are just Wisconsin wannabees anyway. When I first moved to California, I would use the term and get blank stares in response. The world was a much smaller place then and I had no clue that bubbler was just a regional colloquialism. I use it as the title of my blog as a way to connect with those that know what it means and hopefully interest those that don't.
Born in Milwaukee, I moved to Southern California in 1980, with a five-year hiatus in Maui.
I now live in Torrance, California with my SO.
I design circuit boards, a job I totally love. If I wasn't doing that, I would love to have a small restaurant.
Things that make me happy: cooking, eating, music, and vegetating in my backyard.

Where do you find all these obscure 'holidays'?
