The young man that sold it to me said it is an Indian Bitter Melon and (surprisingly) it is very bitter. And apparently it is good for ya too.
I'll have to check around and find a recipe that uses it and if I survive I'll post about it.

Wow--I've never seen that before, either. What a weird-looking thing! :)
Hey, you've visited Buck's blog before, right? He's all into those strange foods, too. :)
I better hurry up and cook it. I love reading Buck's blog...he's a brave man....even I wouldn't eat balut!
Bitter melon is used for Type 2 diabetes and could mess with (decrease) your levels. It's not something you'd get from your doctor though.
I got a product called Heart Chocolate last year and it was made with bitter melon.
The label said "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR NURSING..."
Jeanna--I was amazed to see that info about the diabetes stuff on the wikipedia page. Was the candy any good? or were you afraid to eat it with all the warnings?
OK, I just had to say that I am SO not Miss Fancypants! *hee hee* Your comment made me laugh. :)
